Nevada’s Assembly Bill 335 brings significant policy updates aimed at improving academic outcomes, educator support, and accountability for English Learners across the state.
Required Language Acquisition Training: Mandates that licensed teachers receive training in English language acquisition by October 1, 2030.
Extended High School Graduation Timeline: Permits newcomer English Learners up to 10 additional semesters (or until age 21) to fulfill high school graduation requirements.
Designated District Leadership: Requires superintendents to appoint a dedicated administrator to oversee and support district-wide English Learner initiatives and school improvement plans.
Fair Accountability & Data Protections: Prevents newcomer achievement data from negatively impacting educator or school performance ratings, while requiring disaggregated data tracking for newcomer, short-term, and long-term ELs.
School Improvement Focus: Requires schools with an EL population of 10% or more to make closing the achievement gap for English Learners a primary goal in their annual school improvement plans.
