There is a training coming up through the organization "Immigrant Connections" about unaccompanied minors in schools. There is a fee of $49 to attend and there are two sessions to choose from. NV higher Ed and CCSD are working on building bilingual ed. @Silvina Jover [Desert Pines HS]is looking for bilingual teachers and will be surveying them in the future. Also check out the CCSD board meeting this Thursday as Ignacio Ruiz gives an update of ELL programs.

So much awesome legislation has come out this session and I am also very excited about the bill. Its a great start to bring more teachers to the classroom. Have you also see AB 198 which is the ELL Bill of Rights. i am very excited about that because it will improve reporting on ELL data for the state.

我也可以说中文，我在国防语言学院就读。I have the same motivation for working with ELs and I really want dual immersion programs so that more students can learn foreign languages. I have taught in Suzhou, China and traveled around the country a bit and I can't wait to go back!

Hi Monica! I agree with you. In the TESOL community we say "Every teacher is a language teacher" because each subject has associated academic vocabulary and with the diversity in our state there is no doubt that you have had and will continue to have bilingual students in your classes. I was so happy to learn that AB195 (The ELL Bill of Rights) passed but I was sad that they took out the provisions for students with Significant Interruptions to Formal Education (SIFE). Does anyone know why that was removed?

Thank you for sharing this article! I was only able to skim it but I hope to give it more attention this summer (fingers crossed). However I did find this quote powerful : "That means that biliteracy will require linguistic comprehension and explicit phonics instruction in English for skills that are untransferable and more ambiguous (Gottlob et al., 1999)." This is something that I try to advocate for all the time in our secondary level ELL instruction, especially for newcomers who have no background in English. They need explicit phonics instruction and currently that isn't something we have available in our state level curriculum (NVAC standards) for ELL students.

I heard recently that Felicia Ortiz from the state board of education is working on an initiative to start a bilingual school in Clark County. Does anyone have info about that?
